Northeast Metro Tech Football Team to Play for League Championship on Thanksgiving Day

Superintendent David DiBarri and Athletic Director Don Heres invite Northeast Metro Tech students, alumni and supporters to attend the annual Thanksgiving Day football game and support the Golden Knights as they play for a league championship.

WHEN:

Thursday, Nov. 25, at 9:45 a.m.

WHERE:

Hemlock Field, 100 Hemlock Road, Wakefield

WHY:

The Northeast Metro Tech Golden Knights football team will host Essex Tech on Thanksgiving Day, with a chance to win the Commonwealth Athletic Conference Large Division title.

The Golden Knights hold an 8-3 record, 4-1 in the CAC. Lowell Catholic also holds a 4-1 conference record, and will play on Wednesday night. Shawsheen Tech is 4-2 in the conference, and also will play on Thanksgiving Day.

The Golden Knights offense is led by senior running back Steve Donnelly, who has rushed for 1,600 yards this season and has scored 160 points. Donnelly has been named a Player of the Week six times by the Boston Globe and Boston Herald.

Junior quarterback C.J. Moriconi has rushed for 600 yards and has scored 120 points. The strong play on the offensive line is anchored by team captain John McDonough, a four-year starter and three-year league all-star who carries a 4.1 grade-point average.

“We’ve played under difficult circumstances with the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Athletic Director Heres, who also is head coach. “One of the biggest challenges for our students and athletes has been returning to school this year and to a routine. But our team has been resilient all season long.”

Northeast also has qualified for the football finals in the large school division of the Massachusetts Vocational Athletic Directors Association. Northeast will play Greater New Bedford Tech on Friday, Dec. 3, at 6 p.m. at Landrigan Field in Wakefield.

“The team has fought hard all season and played well. We would love to see a huge crowd come out on Thanksgiving Day to support them, and push them toward the championship,” Superintendent DiBarri said.
