A Letter to Northeast Parents/Guardians About the ‘Masking Optional’ Policy Beginning Feb. 28

Dear Parent/Guardian:

I am writing to let you know that the Northeast Metro Tech will adopt a “masking optional” policy when students return from February vacation.

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has decided to let the current mask mandate expire on Monday, Feb. 28, after consultation with medical experts and state health officials. The state also has returned control of masking policies to local school districts.

The Northeast Metro Tech School Committee, as it has throughout the pandemic, has followed the state’s guidance and voted to make masking optional starting Feb. 28.

Please note that due to federal and state Department of Public Health guidelines, masks will still be required on school buses and in the nurse’s office. Any student returning from quarantine is required to mask for five days as well.

Our Northeast family has been strong and resilient during the past two years. We have worked hard to ensure the social and emotional health of our students, faculty, and staff. That will continue.

Members of our community may decide to wear a mask, or not wear a mask, for any number of reasons. Faculty and staff will support students through this transition, and ensure that each personal decision is treated with respect.

We will continue to follow the guidance of health professionals and use the latest data to make decisions. Any further changes to the masking policy will be communicated in advance.

We hope you have a safe and enjoyable vacation week, and look forward to greeting our students when they return.

Respectfully,
Carla Scuzzarella, Ed.D
Principal/Deputy Director
