WHAT IS AN ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER?

The state defines an ''English learner'', as  a student who does not speak English or whose native language is not English, and who is not currently able to perform ordinary classroom work in English.

WHAT IS ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)?

"English as a Second Language" (ESL) is an educational program designed for students who are native speakers of other languages and are learning English. HOW CAN I SUPPORT MY CHILD AT HOME?

Ask About Homework Daily

Encourage your child to share their assignments and projects. This shows that you’re interested and provides opportunities for you to support their learning.

Ensure Daily Attendance and Punctuality

Help your child build a routine of going to school every day, arriving on time. Regular attendance is crucial for staying on track and building good habits.

Set Clear Expectations and Routines

Establish consistent rules around study times, bedtime, and screen time. This helps children manage their time effectively and prioritize learning.

Understand and Support Homework

Get familiar with your child’s assignments, even if it’s in a new language or subject. If needed, reach out to teachers for guidance on how you can assist.

Promote Physical and Mental Wellness

Encourage a balanced diet, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep. Good health is essential for focus and academic performance.

Build Your Own English Skills

If you’re learning English, practice it in everyday situations. Your efforts can inspire your child and create more English-language opportunities at home.

Value and Support Your Child’s Home Language

Continue using your home language at home. Bilingualism strengthens cognitive skills, and research shows it benefits long-term academic success.

Be a Positive Role Model

Show your child the importance of lifelong learning by demonstrating curiosity, resilience, and a strong work ethic in your daily life.
